Canada joined hands with USA, UK, and Australia to boycott diplomatic relations with china on human rights abuse and will not sent official representative to for Beijing Olympics 2022.
Prime minister of Canada Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday after waiting several days to join hand with allies for Diplomatic Boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.
“We are announcing today that we will not be sending any diplomatic representation to the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics this winter,” said Trudeau, adding that he does not believe the move from Canada or by allies will come “as a surprise” to China.
“We have been very clear over the past many years of our deep concerns around human rights violations and this is constitution of us expressing our deep concerns for human rights violations.”
Foreign affairs minister of Canada Melanie Joly said that the Canadian Mounted Police has worked in the past with Canadian Olympics committee to try to keep athletes safe while competing abroad, and that work will continue in Beijing she added.
“In this particular situation, we want to make sure our athletes have access to protective services,” she said and noted that work will also focus on also making sure on-site consular support is available.
Minister of Sports of Canada Pascale St-Onge confirmed additional staff have been hired as part of that work.
“Everything will be in place to make sure the athletes are safe”, Minister of sports said.
Diplomatic Boycott Explanation?
The Diplomatic boycott is different from that of an broader boycott. Whereas a normal boycott would see everyone involved not to take part in any activity, but in diplomatic boycott of china for Beijing Olympics on human rights violation means that not to penalize the athletes who want to compete in Beijing Olympics 2022.
Athletes can participate but no government official will travel to China as part of Olympics contingent of Canada and all of the boycotted countries.
