EDMONTON, Canada .- A double from Cyle Larin advanced Canada fight for World Cup 2022 and also to its first win against Mexico in World Cup qualification in more than 45 years on Tuesday at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
Canada with this victory now toping the points table with 16 points in 8 matches with 4 win and 4 draw, USA slipped to second and Mexico on 3rd.
Cycle Larin is the man who raised his right leg two times for Canada lead 2-0 against Mexico. First Time at stoppage time of first half when Canada Defender Alistair Johnston tries a long shot that brought Mexico Goal Keeper Guillermo Ochoa into action. the vateran shot-stopper spilled the rebound, and Larin was very happy to run onto it and finished into the net with his right foot.
The second chance was availed by Larin again when Stephen Eustaquio lofting a ball to the back post where he raised his right leg once again and redirected the shot past Ochoa to double the lead.
Mexico charged back with passion to halved the deficit to 2-1 when Jorge Sanchez played in Jesus “Tecatito” Corona in the 90th minute of the match, and Hector Herrera flew through the box to head in the cross.
Mexico fought hard for equalizer in the final moments but Canada Goal Keeper Milan Borjan denied stoppage-time shots from Sanchez and Sebastian Cordova to secure the historic Triumph after October 10, 1976 which was helped Canada to 1-0 victory in a match that was played as qualification for the World Cup 1978 in Argentina.
This win means Canada stayed undefeated in the year 2021 first eight matches of the final round of Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 qualification and topped the table with 16 points. The Red team will return to action in January 2022 with a trip to Honduras, while Mexico travels to Kingdom of Kingston to meet Jamaica.
